Criminal defense needed in alleged drunk driving accident

Derry drivers who are involved in single-vehicle accidents in which they and their passengers suffer serious injuries are often automatically assigned responsibility. Law enforcement officials at the scene begin looking for factors that led to the crash, such as speed and impairment. If there is any possible indication that charges could be filed, it would be advisable to enlist the assistance of criminal defense counsel as soon as possible.

A 19-year-old woman and her 23-year-old passenger were rushed to a local hospital after a single-car accident that occurred on a recent Wednesday at about 7:20 p.m. Both suffered serious injuries in the crash. Preliminary reports stated that the vehicle left the road and rolled before it came to rest on its roof. Their current conditions are unknown.

It is alleged that alcohol and speed led to the crash. Police believe that the Vermont woman -- who was the driver -- was impaired at the time of the crash, and reports indicate that she is facing charges for aggravated drunk driving. It is not known what evidence led officials to that conclusion or if she is well enough to even know about the charges.

Even as she recovers from her injuries, it would be in her best interest to consult criminal defense counsel to protect her rights. As would be the case for any Derry resident in her position, she is presumed innocent of the charges until and unless she is found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. In the meantime, her counsel can become familiar with the evidence prosecutors intend to present to the court and fight to ensure that her rights are protected throughout the process.
